Be warned, it's a soft cover, and it's small...
I bought this to give to my nephew with the matching Tonka truck. I probably wouldn't have had I taken full note of the book's dimensions and the fact that it is NOT a board book, nor a hard-cover. It actually got lost in the packaging and for a moment, I thought it might have missed the shipment!

It might be nice to read aloud to your toddler (the images are nice) but you won't want to leave your tot alone with it as the book will become damaged quickly.

My Son Loves It
Even though we have a lot of classic toddler books, this is one of my son's favorites. He is almost 2, he has gone from just liking to see the dump truck on every page, to listening to the story.

This one started it all...
This is the book that got my son fascinated with trucks! His day care center has this book and his teachers told me one day that they LOVE my son; because while all the other kids are running around screaming, my son is sitting in the middle of the floor "reading" this book. Needless to say, I had to go out and get it myself, hoping it'd allow me some time to get things done around the house! My son really does love this book. He reads it every day when we get home from day care, and at 18 months old, he still hasn't torn any of the pages because he is SO careful with it. He doesn't want any damage to come to this favorite book of his!

We read this four or five times each day
When my now 8-year-old son was about a year old, this was his favorite book. We read it endlessly, to the point that I would hide it in his bookshelf in hopes that we could read something else. But, he would patiently search through his books until he found it -- "The Truck Book." At some point, he totally lost interest in this book and in vehicles, but I've kept the book all these years because I have such fond memories of reading it together. Plus, I have it memorized!

Devon Reads this Truck Book a Lot
My son Devon loves this Truck Book. He's two months shy of three, already knows his numbers, his letters and can recognize certain words, probably because Sara and I don't have a television and we read him books like this every night. He's really into trucks, trucks of all sizes, but especially yellow ones. The big dump truck with the giant tires on the cover of this book fascinates him. He likes to pretend he's the driver and I'm the guy in the yellow jeep waving up to him. He just pours over this book, ogling the old timey trucks, like the Wienermobile and the milk truck shaped like a bottle of milk. He likes the car carrier, the cranes and the forklifts. He's just a truck loving child and that's okay by us, because it's got his nose in books and that's the best place for it to be.

Classic toy continues to entertain
I recently bought this toy for my two year old daughters. They love it!!! It took them a little while to figure out how it worked, but as soon as they did, they started playing with it all the time. They can entertain themselves for quite awhile. It was a very good value.

Thank you Mr. Potato Head!
Mr. Potato Head just potty trained my 3 year old! After much discussion with her about using the potty, we finally found the trick for her! Each time she went she got to put a piece on her new Mr. Potato head and by the time she was half done with the pieces she was potty trained. I doubt Mr. Potato Head has had such a heroic review.

It arrived in time for my grandson's first birthday. He loves them and they are small enough to carry in his baby bag.

Ideal trucks for a toddler or preschooler
My son received these as a gift when he turned 2 years old. His pleasure was instant and lasting. Back then we got a kick out of his insistence on trying to carry all three trucks at once when it was time to leave the house.

At 3.5 years old, he still plays with them; His younger brother likes them, too. These trucks go outside, in the bathtub, in the car. They're sturdy yet lightweight, so they wouldn't hurt much if one were chucked at a sibling's head.

The pieces can be disassembled (loader, mixer and dumper are removable) and we have reassembled them countless times and they still fit and operate perfectly. Highly recommended.

good choice
These trucks are the right size for my 2.5 year old grandson. They are easily washable, virtually indestructable and have no sharp edges. They don't hurt him and don't scar the furniture when he plays roughly with them. He loves them and I can feel comfortable with him playing with them with little supervision. The price was right, too!

Thought it would be a great toy for grandson
I thought this would be a great toy for our 3 year old grandson. As I
watched him trying to play with it, I was wishing I had gotten something else. If you want a push type toy, this isn't one for that. He's still into running and pushing bigger vehicles. This one isn't tall enough.
Then he tried moving the blade up and down and that proved to be rather
hard and doesn't move much when it does move. Later we took it to the
park so he could play in the sand with it. The rubber tracks kept
coming off. He finally got so frustrated with that, he went to play with
something else. I kept thinking about how much I had paid for this toy
that had turned into such a disappointing experience for him and myself.
If I had know about these things before I purchased it, I would have gone with something else.

annoying crawler tracks!
My son has this toy, we got if for him when he was 2, and at 3 he hardly plays with it anymore. He much prefers the Mighty Tonka construction toys.

But, If your child likes construction stuff, they'll probably like this toy for digging with all their others. But, I have to warn you, I really do not like the crawler trax. They inhibit the movement along the ground, and keep falling off. I have to put them back on all the time, and that frustrates my son...and me! The bulldozer in this group does the SAME thing. We just keep the tracks off of both and it rolls fine.

It's all true...
Somehow we have avoided letting our little guy take this to the shops or to the playpark - but that's about the only time day or night he can bear to be parted from it. A real hit for any little truck enthusiast.I also cannot stand that the stickers fade if left outside in the sandbox at all, you have to bring them in each day when done or the stickers fade and make the item look crappy. This is true for all the Tonka construction vehicles. We used to bring them all in, and one night we forgot. These things are played with outdoors all the time, you'd think they could figure out a way to keep the decals from looking so bad. So, be sure you bring your toy inside each night to keep it looking nice...if you care.
Just a note, this (and the bulldozer) are much smaller than the Mighty Tonka things that we have...I am not sure why they make this so small and not a "Mighty", but they do.

Tough for a 2 year old to manage the handles
My son Carter is having a hard time working the levers that move the trencher and especially the backhoe but will grow into it. It's a little frustrating now. This is a well made product and very sturdy and durable, and for all the maltreatment it's received, it has not rusted or cracked in any metal or plastic parts.

a great read
This is an excellent book for a child with interest in fire fighting and rescue vehicles. My son goes bananas over firetrucks (and now this book)!
If your son/daughter is in to firetrucks,this is the book. My two-year old son is bananas over this book. He looks at it all the time and loves rubbing his hands over the textures on each page. The pictures are great and realistic. This is a must-have for the (2-year old) firetruck ethusiast! He/she will have blast with this book.

For much smaller kids...
I bought this book for my three year old who LOVES fire trucks. Although he does love it, it is a bit small and seems geared toward age 1-2. It is a very short book, just a few pages, and very small for the price. The size is clearly listed on the page, but I wasn't prepared for how small it actually was. Still a cute and entertaining book my son enjoys looking at the pictures and feeling the front grill of the fire truck.

great book for little boys who love trucks
My son is 3 and has loved construction vehicles since he was a baby. He loves this book and wants me to read it all the time. I like the book because it's very realistic; a young boy who loves trucks and what he would do if he could drive a loader. It's informational as it tells what loaders do. A good educational book that's fun for boys.

Big Trucks in Action
ISBN 0439639204 - Leave it to Tonka to take board books to a whole new, nearly indestructible level. The book has a mere 8 pages and absolutely no storyline whatsoever - and kids will love it.

Each page shows a truck in action and tells what it does - demolishing, lifting, etc. Moveable parts, not just the usual flaps, make this a much more interactive book than you might expect.

The flaps that do exist are much more delicate than most, since they are basically glued in place and are made of thin cardboard. Those may tear off in small hands easily, but the other moving parts are sturdy and the pages are twice as thick as normal board book pages to accommodate the inset parts. Tonka tough, for sure!

One of the Best
Our son will turn 3 next month and he's been enjoying this book since his first birthday. At first I thought there was not much to the book, but it really has been a hit for our son. Who would have thought that a simple story about a fireman saving a cat from a tree would have engrained itself in this boy's playtime activities virtually every day.

Very well designed
Bought this toy for my 2 1/2 yr-old Grandchild, and even if he doesn't seem to be a "destructive" type of boy, he did handle it with no restrictions. In spite of that, the truck works OK, and the ladder is intact.
I liked the fact that there are several choices for the electronics. Siren sounds, messages, etc
The fireman figure received a good deal of handling, but remains in one piece.
I recommend this truck for any kid 3 or more year-old.

Tonka fire engine
Overall the fire truck was of good quality. However the lights don't fuction correctly. Appears to be durable product otherwise.

Awesome Truck! NO SIREN!
My son is 2 & 1/2 and he loves this fire truck. Santa brought it to him and he played with it for an hour before he looked at any other present! The ladder rotates 360 degrees with a little noise and the lights work but there is no siren! It's a great toy that won't grate on your nerves!

Fun truck
I got this truck for my son for Christmas. He likes the truck and the noises it makes however he gets frustrated that the truck will barely move on carpet. It has to be used (if you want it to go on it's own) on hard floors.
Other than that the truck is great.
My son likes to put little toys in the back and push it around the house. It seems to be very durable seeing as how he has banged it and dropped it numerous times and it has held up wonderfully with a roudy 18 month old!

OK toy
This fisher price toy is fair. My 8 month old son is able to press down on the cow and watch the truck move on its own and encourages him to crawl after it. But it doesn't go very far and is extremely slow on carpet. My son doesn't really care for this toy and prefers a caparable toy by the wiggles which goes much faster and further. good concept but doesnt deliver.

Encourages Crawling
When the Cow is pressed the truck rolls a short distance so that it encourages a crawling child to chase after it but not so far they loose interest in the toy. The sheep and pig make cute noises when shook and are great to chew on. This toy is really made to be used on tile or hardwood surfaces because on carpet it doesn't really seem to go anywhere but spins it's wheels.

My Son LOVES this toy
My son loves loves this toy. It is absolute favorite. He got it when he was about 13 months, and now he is 22 months and he still loves it. The only problem with it is that it is super loud. At first we would hide it, so that he would only play with it when he found it. But then we finally just decided to make it an outside toy. He loves it so much, but the noise level was just way to much.

Great Toy for the Price
Hi there,
I am the parent of a 16 month daughter. She absolutely loves this. She loves watching her daddy mow the lawn and now she feels big having her own. I like that it has three settings. One is for learning, another for music and one for just normal mower sounds. I put it on the latter and explain how a mower works. I also use this for teaching push and pull, which is why I gave it an educational rating. You can also teach higher and lower and faster and slower because the songs use these words. I show my daughter what they mean by faster and slower and use the real grass before and after daddy mowes to explain that the grass gets shorter, as well as other real life examples. The songs are cute and addicting as usual for Fisher-Price toys. One is "Mow, Mow, Mow your lawn on a Sunny day, Push and Pull, etc. Learning as you play.

Anyway, my daughter just loves pushing it around the house.

I didn't give it four stars for the same reason as other reviewers: Its hard to hear songs when it is being pushed and the bar doesn't stay up. My husband fixed this by inserting a cotton swab into the handle part, but even these needs replaced from time to time.

Great toy
My son received this lawn mower for his 1st birthday. He actually didn't get around to playing with it much until after he started walking. Once he turned 15 months, he has played with this toy day in and day out. The songs that play on it are cute, and my son has learned to play and push every button on the mower and knows what it does. The only complaint I have about this toy is that sometimes the little balls that the blades push around when you are pushing the mower, get jammed up. Other than that, this is a great toy and my son loves it and is still playing with it every day at 17 months right now.

Not a good gift for a 1 yr old
My son received this as a gift for his first birthday. He does not have the Tonka truck it would attach to. As a stand alone toy this leaves a lot to be desired. Although he is walking, this toy trips him up when he tries to push it along. Even at the lowest height setting it will end up completely verticle. The crane is to complicated for him to work. He does like the little magnets which I would find strewn all over the house. Had to put them away so that he'll have them when he is old enough to work the toy as intended. This toy should be sold for an older age if it is to be used alone.

Good toy for use with scoot and scoop
My son likes this toy when attached to the scoot and scoop. It would not be a good toy on its own. He likes towing trucks with it.

Poor Design
We bought this together with the Tonka Wheel Driver Scoot n' Scoop 3-in-1 ride-on. With an attachment that comes with the crane, you can turn the ride-on into a tow truck. Good idea but it doesn't work very well. My son can never keep things attached to the hook on the crane. And the crane is virtually useless by itself. Pictures always show the crane standing by itself but it won't stand alone. The child has to hold it up, while trying to operate the crane to pick things up. Its too much to do at one time. My children do play with it time to time, they pretend its a vacuum and push it around the floor.

Quality Is Far From The Old Tonka
It's a shame how far from the old Tonka metal toys this line of toys has come. Honestly this thing isn't worth the 3 stars that I gave it. Tonka toys use to closely resemble the real machine but this thing is just awful. It cheap plastic and the arms are incredibly filmsy. When we put it into my son's toybox, it came back out all warped up where something else had been sitting on it. You can't even use it now.

We bought the whole line of Tonka Wheel Driver's at Christmas and have been disappointed with everyone of them. There are other better Tonka toys out there.

My son saw this before Christmas and the Tonka Tow Truck but this one was what he wanted. He has a great time with it, and it functions as a dump truck as well. I think it's a fun item.

Could be improved
My 18 month old son does enjoy this toy but the design could use some improvement. The brown seat has to be completely removed and then inserted into the back in order to make this a walker. It's impossible for my son to change it himself. We just don't understand why they couldn't hinge the seat so he could convert it from walker to ride-on easily.

Grows with your child!
I'm all about toys that will last longer than a month. This tonka truck is a big hit with my son. We got it for him when he was 9 mo old and it was worth the money! At first he liked just standing and moving the objects like the key/blinker/horn for the noise. Now he loves practicing to walk with it. Eventually he will be able to ride on it too!
My only annoyance is that when the key is turned you have to wait awhile for the engine noise to stop. You can't just turn the key back to make it stop. It also seems a little loud and there's no volume control. I think it bothers me more than him.
Overall, he's having fun with this toy!

lots of fun at one
My baby loves this truck! He's still learning how to walk without support, and loves to both push this truck and ride on it. The steering wheel is great, and the shape sorter is fun, but put on a back burner with everything else goin on. We also got the crane that attaches to the back, and he plays with that just as much. Great tonka toy.

The scoop-up feature is cool - my 5 year old likes that part a lot.

Tonka Toys. Even the name sounds tough. And make no mistake about it. Tonka toys were tough, especially back in the good old days when toys were made to last, or as they would say in their TV commercials, "They're made Tonka tough". Yes, every tough kid had to have his Tonka truck. So when did this all start? How long has Tonka been cranking out these tough trucks?

Tonka started in 1947. The first trucks were made by a company called Mound Metalcraft. The company was located in Mound, Minnesota in a very small warehouse. No, this wasn't what you would call a big business when it began. The company itself actually specialized in manufacturing garden tools, which had to be tough. Taking that some technology and approach, they began making some of the toughest trucks ever put together.

In their first year alone, Mound Metalcraft manufactured over 37,000 of these tough trucks. This in spite of the fact that they only had two designs. The two designs were a steam shovel and a crane. Oh and in case you're wondering, the word Tonka means "great" in Sioux.

After World War II Tonka trucks became very popular with post war families. The demand for these trucks was so great that it far outweighed production. A year of the company's inventory would be sold out in just a few months.

The whole premise of the Tonka company and one that they refused to ever compromise on, was that their toys should be durable and give your child as much play time as possible out of them. They felt that there was no reason their toys shouldn't last for many years. And they did.

In the almost 60 years since the first Tonka toys were made, over 250 million of them have been sold. To this day, their vehicles are made to withstand just about anything you can throw at them. What began as just two trucks has grown into a whole line of trucks and playsets.

Over the years there have been some milestones in the Tonka legacy. It took over 17 years since their first truck, but in 1964 the most popular truck that they ever made, the Mighty Dump, came into existence. No truck of theirs ever sold more units. Between 1965 and 1972 was what was called the "Mighty Age". This is when the Tonka Mighty Series grew tremendously, giving us titles like the Mighty Clam, Crane, Shovel, Scraper, Car Carrier, Bulldozer, Wrecker, Hydraulic Dump, Roller, Bottom Dump, Mixer, Loadmaster and Grader. These were some of the most popular trucks ever.

Between 1973 and 1982 Tonka added more vehicle categories. This period of time gave us the Rescue Vehicle, Car Carrier, Forklift, Earth Mover, Adventure Buggy and, believe it or not, the Mighty Winnebago.

Over the next 25 years Tonka continued to produce quality products and new additions such as Chuck My Talking Truck, the first talking Tonka Toy.

Tonka promises to come out with trucks that are even tougher than the ones made almost 60 years ago.

That is going to be a tough act to follow.

FUN FUN FUN
Santa Clause brought my two boys one of these each. My boys are ages 2 and 4. They already have the Tonka Toughest Mighty Dump truck and my 4 y/o asked Santa for the tractor to go with his dump truck. Three days after getting it, he left it in the drive way and I ran over it. It barely dented the metal scoop, hubby was able to straighten it out with a hammer. It didnt damage any of the plactic parts at all, apparently the metal scoop protected the rest of the tractor. My boys take these to the park and play in the sandbox. They love these tractors. The only change I would make would be to make the tires a bit tougher, I can forsee those wearing out before my boys do, LOL.

The dump bed, however, is made of heavy-duty steel--just the way parents will remember this toy.
